Space, The Final Frontier

I’ve recently adapted it to fit into my own life. Instead of outer space, I am using it to represent my own personal space, or as Michael Hyatt recently posted, Margin.

During the month of June, my life was in hyper-drive. The children needed to be driven all over town at any given moment, and I began impulse buying whenever I had the chance to drop by the store, causing my budget to blow up. I had zero time to spend with my friends, or my husband, or even God. My writing ceased, and with it, my navigational system went out.

After a monthh of this, I realized the importance of creating space in every area of my life. Just as the Enterprise had a Chief Engineer, Scotty, to maintain the ship, I needed to have a plan of action for my life in writing.. Reading the above post on Margin, inspired me to compile an ideal week.

Now I realize the importance of setting aside certain days of the week for writing, and adult time, and yes, even time for my kids to be driven all over town. This way, I can post it on the refrigerator, and my entire crew can see where we are headed.

My budget is back on track, thanks to a recent book called, “World’s Cheapest Family.” Amazingly, the advice in this book goes right along with my newfound desire to create space in my life. Now my finances can have the proper space, ccreating a much safer flying experience.

State of the Family

Every January my husband and I get away together to have our annual State of the Family and Finances review.

Getting away from the hustle and bustle of your normal life is extremely important because sometimes the only way to see the solution to a problem is to step outside of the issue for a moment.

We both write out our annual goals, then pray together about the lists.

We discuss any major purchases we see in our upcoming year (i.e.. drivers ed for our almost 16 year old, vacation’s, etc.).

Next we talk about any character issues we are having with the kids. At this point, we focus on each child, one by one, and discuss issues and possible solutions. Then we discuss how to implement these new solutions.

We discuss our family life and make sure we aren’t too busy and that we are getting fed at our local church as well as evening Bible study.

Finally, we check in to be sure we are both satisfied with our marriage life.

Of course we take lots of breaks to just relax and recharge our batteries (This year we added prayer walks which were amazing).

For 2012 we stole away to the mountains for 5 days in a small two bedroom cabin with a fireplace and hot tub.

When we finish, we are both revived, refreshed and recharged. The kids know enough to be tense when we arrive home, because change is imminent. But we know the issues we’ve come to expect are now going to be addressed and in time resolved.

When’s the last time you and your honey got away for a time to reflect? If you aren’t married, you can still get away with a girlfriend and disconnect long enough to work out any kinks in your daily life.

This is an annual investment I believe everyone should make. It’s well worth the money spent for a better year and mentally refreshed you.

Making a List for Christmas

Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is just around the corner. So what’s a busy mom to do?

Make a list – and check it twice, right?

On Sunday, I had each child come into my office and tell me what they hoped to receive for Christmas. I neatly wrote each request down in my notebook. Next, I added other friends and family members – along with a gift idea.

Have you ever wondered Why we indulge one another with material gifts when God is the one who gave us the best gift of all, Jesus?

My husband and I are going to really downplay the gift giving this year. Not because we feel it’s wrong, but because we want the kids to realize the best gift ever is the gift of receiving God’s salvation through Jesus.

To encourage right thinking, we will do a family project to help those in need. We can get involved through different local churches in feeding the hungry in our area, Christmas Mother, Toys for Tots, etc… By doing something for those in need,as a family, we will be unifying our beliefs and creating long lasting memories.

Do you remember exactly what you received for Christmas when you were 13? You probably only remember one or two gifts. If I asked you to tell me about a time when you helped someone in need you would probably be able to give me word for word details. Why? Because that’s what really matters in life.

On The Go Mom

The previous week flew by with a flash!  Where did the time go?  Is it really the weekend, again?!?

This all started because I had to fill out a new patient form this week. When I got to the question about employment I thought, I guess I need to write stay-at-home-mom, but when am I at home?

I suppose the term came about many, many years ago when mothers DID stay at home (Think of June Cleaver). They had time to bake (from scratch!), do laundry and iron, clean (to perfection), sew a new outfit, or mend something, prepare a homemade supper, etc…As if?!?

PhotobucketHere’s the modern mom’s day (one who is not working outside of the home): Get the kids up and ready for school (with a breakfast bar), drive them to school, take dog to the groomer, get a quick work out at the gym, pick up laundry from laundry mat, go to a parent/teacher conference, grab lunch on the go, have the oil changed in the van (checking emails with your Droid while you wait), get into carpool line, take kids home and help with homework, take kids to soccer game, drive two or three other kids home and then grab Chinese food for dinner, tuck kids into bed, start another load of laundry, say “hello” and “goodnight” to your husband, pack lunches, walk the dog, fall into bed exhausted!!!

The times have changed, why not our title? So, if you are an on-the-go-mom, let’s unanimously change what we write on those new patient forms, or even what we say when asked, “What do you do?” From now on my response will be, “I’m an on-the-go-mom, thank you!”
